Northern Lights in Kansas City Tonight and Tomorrow!

The Northern Lights Are Still Here!

The northern lights are lighting up the skies over Kansas City, Missouri, and the KC metro area this week! If you live near Overland Park, Olathe, Lee’s Summit, Liberty, or anywhere in the Kansas City area, you can see this amazing light show tonight and tomorrow. At Window Wolf, we’re excited to celebrate this rare event with our friends and neighbors right here in KC. Find a dark spot in Kansas City and look north after 9 p.m. for the best views.

Why Are We Seeing the Northern Lights?

The northern lights happen because the sun is very active right now. The sun sent a lot of energy towards Earth. When that energy hits the top of our sky, it makes the air glow in colorful ways. This glowing is called “aurora borealis,” but most people call them the northern lights.

The sun's energy mixes with our air near the North and South Poles. When this happens, we sometimes see beautiful lights dancing in the sky, even in places like Kansas City!

Tips for Seeing the Lights

  • Find a spot that is dark, away from street lamps and city lights.

  • Look north. The lights will show up best in that direction.

  • Try to spot them between 9 p.m. and midnight, when it’s the darkest.

  • Bring a camera! Phones can sometimes see the lights even better than our eyes.

Come outside tonight or tomorrow, look up and you might catch a magical show in the sky!
